About volunteering with us

Would you like the chance to help a child who needs additional adult support in their life? We work with families in the London Boroughs of Camden, Islington and Southwark. If you would like a way to get involved with your local community and make a positive difference, volunteering with Friendship Works is a great way to enjoy the time that you are giving to support young people.

This section has more information about being a volunteer with Friendship Works, including some of the skills that a mentor needs, the questions we get asked most often and an online application form. You can also download a pack which has all of the information on this section in a handy guide.

Our network of volunteers meet with the young person they support for a few hours most weekends over the course of two years. They build a friendship, have fun and help to make a positive difference. Volunteers are fully trained and supported every step of the way by our team of experienced caseworkers, who are always on hand to give advice and guidance.

Find out more about being a mentor

Mentoring supports the development and wellbeing of children. Through friendship, new experiences and the support of a positive role model, children have a stronger sense of self-belief and confidence. They learn new things about the world, their horizons expand and they are more aware about the possibilities and choices available to them. Mentoring can give them new interests, help them to believe in themselves and recognise their skills, or just give them some time out from what can often be a difficult childhood. It can make a huge difference to the person they will become as an adult and the things they achieve in life.

Friendship Works is about being a good friend. Making time for someone and supporting them on their journey. Our best friends are often our oldest ones who have seen us through some tough times. They are the people who have always been there for us and the ones we know we can count on. They are fun to be with and help us see the good things in life. That's what makes friendship work.

If you are not at the right time of your life to volunteer now, there are lots of other ways to get involved, from telling other people at your work about us, running to raise money, or following us on twitter and facebook. Why not sign up for our monthly newsletter so that we can send you the latest updates?

If you know someone who you think would make a great volunteer, you can tell them about Friendship Works.
