Michael is 12. He came to Friendship Works because his Mum has health problems which mean it’s hard for her to get out and about.
“When I was first told about Friendship Works I was a bit nervous as didn’t know who I’d get but after a while I was really keen to have a mentor so I could have the chance to go out and try new things. I also wanted to give mum a bit of a break. I didn’t mind who I had as long as they were nice, fun and showed an interest in me so we could talk and get to know each other.
“My first meeting with Katie was fine but I was a bit nervous at first as I was still getting to know her. But after a few weeks I felt more confident and looked forward to our outings. We’ve been matched for over a year now and have done lots of great activities like going to the park, cinema, ice skating, the museums, theatre and swimming. I especially enjoyed Go Ape where we went for our year anniversary. The best bit about having Katie is that I get to go out on a regular basis and do things that I wouldn’t normally be able to do with my family.
“I like Katie because she’s funny, caring and looks out for me. Katie is special because she’s a really good friend.”
